A “LEGO Technic set registry” can mean four different things:

First, decide what kind of registry you need

A set catalog is a reference organized around identifiers and release information. Its records may include a set number, name, year, theme, subtheme, piece count, technology, image, or related products. You consult it to answer questions such as “Which Technic excavators were released in this period?” or “What set does this number identify?”
A personal registry is a record of your property. It needs information a public catalog usually cannot know: quantity, condition, completeness, storage location, purchase history, missing elements, photographs, and whether a particular copy is available for building.
Neither is the same as LEGO Insiders registration. LEGO describes registration as a QR-based rewards process: eligible building instructions are scanned, the owner signs in, and points are awarded to a qualifying account. That guidance does not establish the search, condition records, exports, or backups expected from a collection-management tool.
The historical Technica registry is different again. It classified Technic elements into groups; it was not a catalog of complete retail sets. Where to browse LEGO Technic sets—and why no supplied list can be called complete
Brickipedia is one possible starting point for browsing Technic products, but it should be treated as a collaboratively maintained fan reference rather than an official registry.
Its Technic list uses several overlapping structures, including set-number ranges, decades, technologies, licensed themes, named subthemes, and supplementary categories. Examples include CONTROL+, Power Functions, Dacta, licensed themes, service packs, supplementary items, Slizer/Throwbots, and RoboRiders.
That structure can be useful when you know only part of a set’s identity. However, Brickipedia explicitly labels the list incomplete and directs readers looking for BIONICLE to a separate list. It should therefore not be presented as exhaustive or authoritative (Brickipedia’s fan-maintained Technic list, reviewed August 7, 2026).
A category’s existence does not prove that every eligible product is present, correctly classified, or documented to the same standard. Fan-maintained pages may combine conventional retail sets with educational material, accessory packs, service items, bulk elements, licensed products, or adjacent themes. Record fields can also vary: one entry may have a year and piece count while another lacks an image, price, or other detail.
Begin each lookup with the set number whenever possible. A number is usually a more stable key for comparing records across catalogs, inventories, and marketplaces.
Use this lookup sequence:

- Confirm the displayed set name.
- Compare the release year or period.
- Check the theme or subtheme.
- Compare distinctive functions, panels, wheels, stickers, motors, hubs, or pneumatic parts.

- Record the source and the date checked.
- Mark whether the result has been independently confirmed against packaging, instructions, or the physical model.
If no exact-number result appears, search by a distinctive name fragment or model type, then narrow by year and technology. Licensed branding can also help, but it should support rather than replace the set number.
Avoid compressing provenance, currency, completeness, and verification into one ambiguous “status” field. Use separate fields instead:

A useful catalog should explain its sources, last update, inclusion policy, and correction process. Without declared boundaries, two reasonable “total Technic set” counts can disagree because their authors are counting different things.
There is little value in reproducing a large table from an incomplete extract. A partial table can imply comprehensive coverage while omitting most releases and displaying inconsistent fields. It is more useful to explain how to search, verify, and classify individual results.
No database considered here can be called universally best for Technic discovery. Prefer the one that contains the records you need, explains its inclusion rules, identifies its sources, and permits ambiguous entries to be checked elsewhere.
What the archived Technica registry actually cataloged
The old Technica page was not a registry of complete LEGO Technic sets. The Wayback Machine snapshot dated May 13, 2006 presents an index of individual element classes numbered 001 through 081, followed by five archived Throwbot classes labeled a01 through a05 (archived Technica element registry).
Its broad groupings include:
- Structural elements such as plates, beams, cross axles, and connectors.
- Mechanical components such as gears, pulleys, chains, steering, suspension, engines, transmissions, and propellers.
- Flexible and pneumatic elements.
- Electrical systems associated with different voltage generations.

- Archived Throwbot element classes.
The page also links to a separate key. The preserved extract contains the class index rather than the complete contents of every linked class. It therefore documents the structure of the classification system more clearly than every individual element assigned to it.
That distinction matters. A set registry ordinarily treats a retail set as its principal record. An element registry classifies an axle, connector, gear, wheel, motor, or similar component. The archived page can help researchers understand one fan-created taxonomy, but it cannot identify which complete sets a collector owns or establish whether a partial model contains its intended inventory.
Nor can a 2006 snapshot establish coverage of elements introduced later.
The archive is a third-party historical source, not an official LEGO publication. Its value lies in documenting how a particular fan reference organized Technic elements—not in certifying current names, inventories, compatibility, or completeness.
The current Isodomos website should not be treated as evidence of an active LEGO service. Its About page describes a reference site covering masonry subjects such as brick, concrete block, stone, bond patterns, dimensions, and mortars.
The site’s current About page provides no evidence that the present publication owns, maintains, or continues the archived Technica project.

Accordingly, this article should be understood as an independently sourced explanation of the historical archive—not as an Isodomos Technica revival or an official continuation of that project.
Choose a collection method by what you want to do
There is no universal winner among spreadsheets, set trackers, parts databases, and mobile apps. Compare them according to the work you intend to do.
For simple ownership: use a set tracker or spreadsheet
If you mainly want to know which complete sets you own, a set-level tool minimizes data entry. Add the set number and quantity, then supplement the imported catalog record with personal information such as condition, completeness, and location.
A spreadsheet is the neutral alternative. It is customizable, easy to inspect, and under your direct control. You can create Technic-specific columns without waiting for a service to support them and retain local copies in widely readable formats.
The tradeoff is manual work. You must enter records, standardize spellings, update values, manage images or links, and prevent duplicate rows yourself. A spreadsheet also does not automatically know which parts belong to a set unless you import or build that relationship.
For parts and MOC planning: use set and part lists together
Rebrickable documents two principal collection methods:
- Set Lists, presented as the beginner-oriented route, record owned sets and derive parts from their cataloged inventories.
- Part Lists, described as more flexible but more labor-intensive, record loose pieces individually.
Recorded sets and parts can then be used to calculate sets and MOCs that may be buildable. Users can combine both methods and choose whether particular lists participate in those calculations (Rebrickable’s collection-management guide, reviewed August 7, 2026).
“May be buildable” is the important qualification. A derived inventory represents the standard contents recorded for the set. Your physical copy may be missing an axle, pin, gear, hose, motor, hub, sticker, or another important element. Build calculations depend on the accuracy of both the source inventory and your personal records.
For detailed condition tracking: prioritize flexible fields
Collectors with sealed duplicates, display models, incomplete purchases, or mixed lots need more than an “owned” checkbox. Look for support for:
- Multiple physical copies.
- Separate condition and completeness per copy.
- Purchase date and cost.
- Storage location.
- Missing-parts notes.
- Box and instruction status.
- Photographs and attachments.
- Custom tags.
- Separate sale, trade, display, and building availability.
- Independent Insiders-registration status.
A spreadsheet often handles these distinctions well. A dedicated tracker may be faster, but only if its data model matches how you collect.
For mobile-first entry: test the workflow before committing
Tracker for LEGO is an unofficial app for Apple platforms. Its developer says users can search sets by theme, year, name, or set number, adjust owned quantities, review collection summaries and values, and synchronize records across devices. Unlimited library size and automatic daily database updates are described as premium features rather than standard free access (Tracker for LEGO App Store listing, reviewed August 7, 2026).
These are developer claims, not independent verification of database completeness, valuation accuracy, or usability. The listing does not explicitly confirm comprehensive Technic coverage. Before adopting the app, search a representative sample from several Technic eras and check its records, filters, duplicate handling, plan limits, and export options.
For valuation: treat every total as provisional
Some trackers estimate collection value automatically. Such a figure can prompt further research, but it is not a definitive resale price.
Use recent sold examples rather than asking prices, and compare like with like: sealed copies with sealed copies, used-complete sets with comparable used-complete sets, and incomplete sets with examples missing similar material. Record the date and basis of the estimate. This recommendation is also made by a commercial collection-app guide, whose product interest should be considered when weighing its advice (commercial set-cataloging and valuation guidance).
For other workflows: assess alternatives without accepting rankings
Commercial comparisons mention Brickset, BrickLink, GameSetBrick, BrickSearch, and BrickIt among broader LEGO collection or identification options. Their emphases differ: some focus on set lookup, some on marketplace records, some on portfolio fields, and others on identifying loose pieces.
One comparison discussing those products was written by the creator of GameSetBrick and contains affiliate relationships, so its recommendations should be treated as promotional opinion rather than neutral ranking (the disclosed commercial comparison).
Use this checklist to evaluate any candidate:
- Can it search or filter for Technic?
- Does it disclose how complete and current its database is?
- Can it distinguish multiple copies?
- Can each copy have separate condition and purchase history?
- Can it represent partial sets?
- Can it derive parts from complete sets?
- Can missing pieces be subtracted or recorded?
- Can owned inventory be used in MOC calculations?
- Can sealed or display sets be excluded from those calculations?

Check current pricing, subscription limits, export support, and platform requirements directly before investing substantial time. A polished interface is not a substitute for accurate, portable data.
Build a Technic-specific record that generic trackers may not provide
A generic owned-set checkbox is rarely enough for a serious Technic collection. The following schema is an editorial recommendation, not a claim about the built-in fields of any named service.

Use one record per physical copy when copies differ materially. A quantity of “3” may be sufficient for three identical sealed copies acquired together, but it is inadequate if one is sealed, one is displayed, and one is incomplete.
Separate records also make sense when purchase cost, storage location, missing elements, or Insiders registration status differs.
Inclusion status
Add an inclusion status field so collection totals follow declared rules. Suggested values include:
- Standard Technic set.
- Educational or Dacta product.
- Service pack.
- Supplementary or accessory pack.
- Bulk item.
- Related theme.
- Promotional item.
- Unresolved classification.
This keeps discovery broad without forcing every adjacent product into the headline Technic total. Maintain one master inventory and calculate narrower totals through filters.
Technic-specific fields
Depending on the collection, add:
- Primary mechanical functions.
- Steering and suspension.
- Gearbox or transmission type.
- Engine or piston simulation.
- Winches, cranes, booms, or lifting mechanisms.
- Motors.
- Battery boxes.
- Powered hubs and control hubs.

Completeness states
Use explicit states rather than one vague condition label:
- Sealed: unopened, with exterior condition recorded separately.
- Built or displayed: assembled or previously displayed; completeness still requires checking.
- Used complete: all required contents confirmed under your stated policy.
- Partial: an identified set with one or more missing components.
- Loose parts: retained elements without a claim that the set is complete.
“Built” and “complete” are not synonyms. A model can appear finished while missing internal pins, alternate-build parts, spare elements, stickers, accessories, or instructions.
For incomplete sets, list critical missing components individually. “95% complete” may conceal the absence of a motor, hub, pneumatic cylinder, specialized wheel, or unique panel. Individual missing-part records are more useful for restoration and build planning.
Keep ownership status separate from Insiders QR status. Suggested rewards fields include:
- Qualifying QR present: yes, no, or unknown.
- Points claimed: yes, no, or unknown.
- Claim date.
- Account note, avoiding unnecessary sensitive information.
- Damaged QR or support required.
Treat estimated market value as a dated observation. Retain notes describing the comparison sales or other basis used, and do not let an app-generated total overwrite your record without review.
Identify and catalog sets without the original box
The set number is the preferred primary identifier. When packaging or instructions survive, commercial cataloging guidance says it can commonly be found on the box or instruction-booklet cover. Record the full identifier as shown rather than relying on a remembered name; some database conventions may also display a suffix.
If neither box nor instructions survives, use a structured identification process:
- Photograph the entire build. Capture the front, back, sides, underside, cabin, mechanism, and motorized areas.
- Record visible markings. Note stickers, printed panels, licensed branding, control labels, and unusual colors.
- Identify distinctive elements. Prioritize uncommon wheels, tires, tracks, buckets, booms, panels, gears, differentials, motors, hubs, battery boxes, pneumatic cylinders, or hoses.
- Estimate the technology generation. Pneumatics, Power Functions, CONTROL+, and older electrical systems can narrow the candidate pool.
- Search a parts-level database. Start with the rarest confidently identified part, then inspect the sets in which it appears.
- Compare candidate inventories and images. Require agreement across several distinctive features rather than accepting the first similar model.
- Assign an identification confidence. Use confirmed, probable, or unresolved.
- Preserve the evidence. Keep photographs and notes with the record.
For a partial build, distinguish confirmed physical parts from an assumed standard inventory. If the model is probably a particular set but key components are absent, do not add its entire catalog inventory to your available-parts total.
Barcodes can accelerate entry when packaging exists, but they should not automatically replace set numbers. Store it as a secondary identifier unless you have verified that it maps unambiguously to the intended record.
Once a probable set is identified, create a missing-parts checklist. For Technic models, inspect at least:
- Pins and connectors.
- Axles and bushes.
- Gears, racks, and differentials.
- Wheels, tires, or track links.
- Pneumatic hoses, switches, pumps, and cylinders.
- Linear actuators.
- Motors.
- Hubs and receivers.

Importing a standard catalog inventory tells you what the record says the set should contain. Your completeness status should reflect what you have physically checked.
Use set lists, parts lists, and backups without losing your work
Use set-level tracking for complete or nearly complete sets. It is faster because one set record can supply a standard parts inventory. This works well for boxed collections, confirmed complete used sets, and models preserved together.
Use parts-level tracking for:
- Bulk lots.
- Heavily incomplete sets.
- Loose Technic components.
- Sorted motors, hubs, pneumatics, gears, and wheels.
- Collections maintained mainly for custom building.
- Parts permanently removed from their original sets.
A hybrid workflow often provides the best balance:
- Put confirmed complete sets in Set Lists.
- Put loose elements in Part Lists.
- Record missing components for incomplete sets.
- Do not count a partial set’s full standard inventory.
- Exclude sealed or preserved display sets from build calculations when they are unavailable for dismantling.
- Reconcile records whenever a model is parted out or rebuilt.
Rebrickable documents the ability to choose whether individual lists participate in build calculations. Its documentation also describes manual CSV exports of Set, Part, and Custom Lists; automatic daily backups are identified as a Pro Plan feature rather than a universal free feature. Do not assume transfers will be flawless.
Use a repeatable backup routine:
- Export before bulk edits, part-outs, merges, or migrations.

- Store at least one copy outside the service being backed up.
- Open the exported file to confirm that it is readable.

Buildability calculations deserve the same discipline. A service may calculate correctly from the data it has received and still produce a misleading result if an incomplete set was recorded as complete. Reliable results require an accurate source inventory, an accurate record of what is physically owned, and clear rules about which pieces are available for use.
Register eligible Technic sets for LEGO Insiders points
Official LEGO registration is a rewards process, not a substitute for a detailed collection registry.
For an eligible physical set:
- Open a phone camera and scan the QR code on the building instructions, or scan it through the LEGO Builder app.
- Follow the displayed link or select the option to earn points.
- Sign in to an existing LEGO account or create one.
- Complete the registration for that physical copy.
LEGO’s guidance says an adult LEGO Insiders account is required to earn points and awards 20 Insiders points for each eligible physical copy. Each copy can earn points once, while multiple eligible copies of the same set may be registered separately (LEGO’s official registration guidance, reviewed August 7, 2026).
Eligibility depends on a qualifying QR code in the instructions. For sets using digital building instructions, LEGO directs owners to the QR code on the quick-start guide. A set previously scanned in LEGO Builder may need to be scanned again and taken through the points-claiming steps. If the code is damaged, LEGO advises contacting support.
Do not infer that every Technic set qualifies. Older instructions may not contain the required QR code, and the official guidance does not provide a comprehensive model-by-model eligibility list. Inspect the documentation belonging to the individual physical copy.
Scanning in LEGO Builder should not automatically be treated as proof that points were claimed. LEGO distinguishes scanning from completing the additional points-claiming steps, so record the result rather than assuming it.
The cited official material does not establish a complete collection-management system with Technic search, detailed completeness fields, valuation, CSV export, local backups, or documented deletion controls. Collectors may therefore need two related but separate records:
- An independent registry showing what they own.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official, complete LEGO Technic set registry?

Are BIONICLE, Throwbots, service packs, and supplementary items included in a Technic registry?
It depends on the registry’s inclusion policy. Brickipedia directs BIONICLE to a separate list while grouping categories such as Slizer/Throwbots, RoboRiders, service packs, and supplementary items around its Technic coverage. The historical Technica index also included archived Throwbot element classes, but it was a parts classification rather than a retail-set list.
Define your rules before calculating totals. Assign standard Technic sets, educational products, service packs, supplementary packs, BIONICLE, Throwbots, RoboRiders, and other related lines separate inclusion statuses. You can then report a narrow Technic total or a broader Technic-related total without rewriting the underlying inventory.
For a durable LEGO Technic set registry, use a qualified fan catalog for discovery, track ownership by set number, add parts-level records when completeness or custom building matters, and export regular backups.
